Sustainability

Thornton has already taken significant steps toward sustainability, but environmental challenges continue to grow. ESMP will help us:

• Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Through energy efficiency, electrification, and clean transportation solutions and other activities.
• Enhance Climate Resilience: Preparing for extreme weather such as severe storms, and extreme temperatures.
• Strengthen Community Equity: Ensuring that climate solutions benefit all residents, including vulnerable populations. 
• Drive Meaningful Action: Establishing short-, medium-, and long-term strategies to meet our climate goals.

Developing the ESMP was a collaborative effort. We spent 2025 engaging residents, businesses, and community leaders through:

• Public Forums & Workshops 
• Surveys & Feedback Opportunities 
• Task Force Meetings – An active Task Force was appointed by the City and has been meeting to help inform and guide the development of the ESMP.

• Updated Greenhouse Gas Inventory – Assessing where our emissions come from and how we can reduce them.
• Equity-Centered Solutions – Addressing environmental justice and ensuring fair access to climate resources.
• Resiliency Strategies – Protecting infrastructure, natural resources, and public health.
• Implementation & Funding Roadmap – Providing clear actions, responsible parties, and potential funding sources.
